There are tons of products that make up a healthy hair care routine, and if you’re struggling with fine, thinning hair, then you need to be extra cautious. That’s because most hair care brands and formulas are made up of dangerous chemicals and additives that not only irritate the scalp but also prevent hair growth and contribute to excessive hair fall.

In fact, there’s one popular drugstore product in particular that dermatologists say you should stay away from because of its damaging effects–it’s alcohol-based products.

“Alcohol is often found in hair care products, but it can be drying to hair, especially if at high concentrations,"  New York-based dermatologist and RealSelf contributor Dr. Sejal Shah tells Bustle

Excessive dryness can cause breakage and prevent the hair from getting the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and full. Plus, it strips the hair of its natural oils and weakens the strands, leaving them defenseless and prone to fall.

Dr. Shah notes that alcohol is a frequently-used component to popular hair products and can be hard to avoid completely. She recommends making sure that it’s at least five down on the list of ingredients if you can't find an alcohol-free product.

She also has some tips for combating dryness and strengthening the strands--starting with introducing a hair oil into your hair care routine.

“If the hair is dried out, oils can replenish much-needed moisture and reduce the risk of breakage,” she says. Her go-to hair oil is the Rapunzel Coconut Oil For Hair Growth because it's formulated with coconut and argan oil, which work to grow hair thicker and stronger.

Dr. Shah also notes that this particular oil won't leave your hair feeling greasy and it also makes for an excellent solution for hair that's been damaged by chemical treatments. Dr. Shah's favorite hair oil may be sold out, but here are some other dermatologist-approved hair oils that work wonders on thinning hair:
